Why is fissure sealing important?

The transition from primary (baby) teeth to permanent teeth is an important milestone in a child’s development. During this period, children may have more difficulty eating, which can lead to a decline in oral hygiene due to reduced chewing function. The first phase of tooth eruption typically begins at the age of 6–7 and continues until around 12–13 years of age.

The first permanent molars also erupt around the age of 6–7. Since the eruption of these “6-year molars” is not preceded by the loss of a baby tooth, parents often do not notice their appearance, and therefore may not pay enough attention to cleaning them.

Cavities most commonly develop in the deep grooves (fissures) of these teeth. With a simple preventive procedure, these areas can be protected by sealing the fissures, preventing food debris from accumulating in the grooves on the chewing surfaces.

It is important to note that this treatment does not make the tooth completely immune to decay and does not replace regular tooth brushing. However, it significantly helps to maintain proper oral hygiene and makes cleaning easier.

The fissure sealing procedure

The tooth surface is cleaned and dried, then the enamel is treated with a mildly acidic solution to help the sealing material bond properly. After rinsing and drying, the fissures are filled with a sealant material and then light-cured.

The procedure is painless, simple, and highly effective. It is definitely worth considering.
